asparagusThe first CSA pickups will be May 10 for Monday customers and May 12 for Wednesday customers. But asparagus is already in, and we don’t want to wait until then to start sharing what looks to be a bumper crop with our valued CSA members.

We’re going to start our CSA pick-your-own days this Saturday, May 1. CSA members may come to the farm to pick up to 5 pounds of asparagus from 10 a.m. until noon. This is a $25 value. We ask that you please arrive by 11 a.m. to begin picking, and finish by noon. We schedule these events carefully to fit into our farm maintenance and picking schedule.

Snead’s Farm is not a pick-your-own farm, and PYO opportunities are an exclusive bonus perk of joining the CSA. In the past, these opportunities have occurred on pickup Wednesdays and Sundays. After hearing customer feedback, we have moved the weekend PYO day to Saturday this year. Members and their families are also invited to stay and play after picking, and do not need to pay admission. This is why we tell people that our CSA is the closest thing we offer to a season pass to visit the farm–members get free admission on both pickup Wednesdays and Saturdays when PYO opportunities are offered.

If you are not yet a member of the 2021 Snead’s Farm CSA, you may join now or in-person at the farm on Saturday and still take advantage of this opportunity. Find all of the information here.

When you come to pick:

  • Stop at the stand first. Give them your name (for families who split shares, give the name of the person who signed up for the CSA). Attendants will have a list, and will mark you off for picking.
  • You will receive a box that holds roughly five pounds of asparagus. Proceed to the field to fill this box.
  • We will clear the field at noon, but you’re welcome to stay on the farm to play.

We plan to offer pick-your-own opportunities for the following crops this year, as weather and crop performance permit:

  • Asparagus (early May)
  • Sugar Snap Peas (mid May)
  • Snow Peas (mid to late May)
  • Strawberries at Braehead Farm (mid to late May)
  • Raspberries (June, July, August)
  • Blackberries (July, August)
  • Sunflowers (June, July, August, October)
  • Pumpkins and winter squash (October)
